31 Creative Pumpkin Painting Ideas for Fall

Painting your pumpkins for fall holidays like Halloween or Thanksgiving instead of carving them has become a growing trend over the past few years. There are so many reasons to opt for painting pumpkins instead of carving: they last longer, they can better match your fall home décor, and it’s easier for small children to do it themselves. Let’s dive into many creative no-carve pumpkin painting ideas you can try at home this year.

Why Pumpkin Painting Ideas Have Become Popular

It’s fun to get into the holidays and have fun celebrating them with your children. The traditions abound for all holidays, but especially those at the end of the year like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

This craft is perfect to do for Halloween but the painted pumpkins can last right through Thanksgiving too!

Carving pumpkins can be tough. You have to time it right so that they actually last until Halloween. Really, you need to carve them no more than two or three days before Halloween or they can start to get kind of gross.

They begin to rot, sag inward, and attract bugs. Then if they are still left out as decor they’ll mold and collapse. Yuck.

Carving pumpkins every year is a fun and messy tradition, but it’s easy to see why pumpkin painting ideas are growing in popularity each year.

Another huge advantage to painting your pumpkins is that small kids can actually participate! Carving pumpkins can be physically difficult, even if you opt for a simple jack-o-lantern design. A lot of pumpkins are very thick and carving them up can be a major arm workout. It’s not really something little kids can participate in too much.

Then there’s the fact that a lot of little kids are skeeved by reaching their hand into the slimy pumpkin to take out all the seeds.

Their biggest part of participation is drawing a design onto the pumpkin for you to mostly carve out yourself, perhaps with a little hand guiding a few wiggles of the knife. It quickly becomes something for the parents to do more than the small children themselves.

Painting your pumpkin is something that can be completed by a child of any age! You might opt for one of the more simple designs below to help them with or just let them wildly paint as they please.

Another advantage to painting your pumpkins is that they are aesthetically pleasing. You can paint a beautiful design or paint them to match your fall decor. Since painted pumpkins last for months, they can stick around to be featured as your Thanksgiving decor long after Halloween passes too.
